My plan to install a 1/2" fuel line*:

  • Hard line from tank to fuel filter
  • Soft line from filter to fuel pump
  • Hard line from pump to engine compartment
  • Soft line to fuel pressure regulator
  • Soft line from regulator to carburetor

    *Plan subject to change

George welded up a couple bungs in to the bottom of the tank in lieu of a sump and I think it'll work out pretty nicely.

    2.28.2004

Three months of procrastination & after much wrestling, I managed to get the new fuel tank in the car. Of course, now with the tank in the car, I can see that using a straight fitting out of the bung will point the fuel line very close to the ground. So now I have to get a 90º fitting to point the line towards the pump. (As I said, my plans are always subject to change.)

Before putting the stock fuel pick up back into the tank, I hacked off the filtered end because I plan to use the stock fuel system as a return line if I feel the need.

    3.23.2004

Almost a month later & I finally get around to fabbing up a mount for the fuel pump and run the hard line. I had to drop the fuel tank so I could drill the holes to mount the pump and I had to place the rear back in so I could make sure that my mounting position would not interfere with anything, my main concern was if it would hit the leaf spring once the car was back on the ground.

I mounted the fuel pressure regulator on the shock tower after much debate with myself. Any other position would make it too difficult to get to when I needed to adjust the regulator. Once the V8 is in the car, only one of those heater hoses will run above the regulator, the other will feed to the back of the engine.

I had a little snag where I ran out of fittings, so work was done for today while I awaited a new order from Jegs.

    3.26.2004

Yay! Ya gotta love Jegs' speedy shipping! :D

I ended up flipping the mounting bracket on the regulator to get it to sit a little higher so it would line up better wtih the hard line. Then I wrestled again with the fuel tank to get it in place. And all that was left was me fabbing up a short hard line to the filter, then a soft line to the fuel pump and I was done!

A couple shots of the rear... I definately think I get some "Trick Points" for this install!
I still have to wire up the fuel pump to be completely finished though.

    The Price for "Trickness":

    Russel Fittings:

    660660 . -8AN (Hard Line) Tube Nut = $3.99 (2/pkg) x 2 = $7.98
    660580 . -8AN (Hard Line) Tube Sleeve = $2.99 (2/pkg) x 2 = $5.98
    610030 . -8AN (Soft Line) Hose End = $6.99 X 4 = $27.96
    660480 . -8AN to 3/8" NPT Adapter = $3.99 x 3 = $11.97
    660360 . -8AN Union = $5.99
    660860 . -8AN 3/8" 90º Fitting = $8.99
    632110 . -8AN Proflex Hose 6' = $32.99

    Jegs:

    555-15101 . High Flow Aluminum Fuel Line 1/2" = $23.99

    Earl's:

    230108 . -8AN In-Line Fuel Filter = $34.99

    Total Price for Trickness = $160.84 !!!

If I had it to do all over again, I don't know if I would've gone this route, but I'm already there so I'm going to enjoy the Trick-nocity of my efforts!

    Change of Plans!

I decided that I didn't like where the fuel pressure regulator was positioned, so I moved it lower. This means that I've got to get more fittings, which is fine because I didn't originally address the FPR to carb lines in my original plan. So I need to buy fittings for that anyway. I fabbed up a bracket to hold the FPR using an exisiting hole because I did not want to drill any new holes in the engine bay.

I plan to use a -8 line from the rear facing fuel port to feed the carb and probably a -6 hose on the front facing port to feed the nitrous.

I also replaced the hard line coming off the fuel tank into the filter with a flex hose. I was worried that the hard line might vibrate enough to eventually snap and leave me with quite a mess.

    11.29.2004

    Finished!

Well, it's a little more *BLING* than I wanted, but it's functional. Honestly, I hate it, and I plan to replace all the lines with black Super Stock hose in the future, but for now it is what it is.

As planned, -8AN line feeding the carb and -6AN into the fuel solenoid. I purchased a screened fuel fitting so I had something to attach the line to.

The only thing left is to install a fuel pressure gauge.

    Price for additional "Trickness":

    Russel:

    610030 . -8AN (Soft Line) Hose End = $6.99 X 2 = $13.98
    610020 . -6AN (Soft Line) Hose End = $4.99 X 2 = $9.98
    660840 . -06AN to 3/8''NPT; 90° Elbow = $9.99
    660860 . -08AN to 3/8''NPT; 90° Elbow = $9.99
    632050 . -6AN Proflex Hose 3' = $15.99

    NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems):

    15561 . FUEL FILTER 1/4" to -4AN = $ 16.99

Original Price for Trickness = $160.84
Addition Price for Trickness = $76.92

    Total Price for Trickness = $237.76 !!!

Looking back, I definately would've went a different route!
Nothing wrong with the shiney line, but my plans were to keep the car as subtle as possible. No biggie, I can always use this stuff on another car!

UPDATE: I redid the fuel system AGAIN
